Jacqueline Johal | Founder of Sarisha Beauty

Jacqueline Johal Owner of Sarisha Beauty

How do you describe what you do? I create gentle, yet effective beauty staples, that are enjoyable to use and look at. I think that having a solid beauty and self-care routine plays a huge role in how we perceive ourselves and how we show up in the world as our best selves. This doesn't mean that you need to have a ten step skin care routine or a makeup bag full of different products. It just means that you're taking the time to show yourself the love you deserve by engaging in acts of self-care.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning? The VERY first thing lately has been checking my phone, which I hate to admit and need to change! Usually i'll get up, do some pilates stretches for about ten minutes, make a matcha latte and write in my Five Minute Journal. After that, I will put on a podcast and do my actual workout or get right to work if I have some very important tasks that need my attention right away.

Where is your favourite destination in the world? This is tough! I love to travel and every new place I visit is so memorable. I do really love South America. So far I've had the chance to travel to Peru and Colombia, but there's so many more countries I want to see and experience. I think Bolivia is next. I also really love Portugal. The food, the people, the aesthetic. I have been to Portugal twice and am looking forward to the next time I can go back.

Which country have you traveled to that inspired you most? France forsure. I moved to Paris back in 2015 and have been back every year since returning. Well, not this year for obvious reasons. The experiences I have there and the people I meet along the way play a big role in shaping who I am, what I like, how I dress, etc. I have a love affair (or obsession) with all things French: music, films, fashion, the way of living... it's so inspiring to me.

Is there an adventure that changed your life? Probably just moving to Europe and living on a completely different continent from my family and friends. I think this is an experience that anyone should go for, if they have the opportunity or means. It really sparked a love for travel within me. I've been in Canada since March now and while I love this country, the travel itch is really starting to get to me. I love the feeling of being somewhere new and having all your senses activated. When I'm abroad, I always need to be ON and aware, yet in awe of my surroundings. It's nice to have a break from your daily routine and to shake things up a bit.

What’s your favourite way to stay active? Lately it's been going for long walks, I really love walking. I'll also do daily workouts on my yoga mat, sometimes with weights. I've been liking the app SWEAT for at home workouts.

What’s an adventure you’re excited to take? It's not a huge adventure, but I'm thinking of going away for a few weeks somewhere within Canada before the new year. Just to breathe in some new air, because I'm craving that. Most likely Montreal for now.

Is there a book that’s changed your life? The first time I read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, it sparked this spiritual interest within me and since then I've read many of his other books which are equally enlightening. I also recently read The Spiritual Awakening and Soulmates & Twin Flames by spiritual authors Luna & Sol. Both of these books really clarified so much that was foggy in my mind or questions I often contemplated in my mind. It's like they read my mind somehow when writing these books. Definitely life changing!

Is there a career/personal accomplishment you’re proud of? Just taking the leap and starting a business, even if I wasn't fully prepared and maybe a bit naive. Sarisha is moving in a direction that I'm proud of and we've certainly grown and continue to grow since I first started. I am proud that the new packaging we're working on will finally reflect the aesthetic and vision that I've always had for the brand. When I first started, I really just wanted to put something out into the world, even if it wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Now having had the past few months to slow down and really plan for the future, I think the brand will go through an exciting evolution.

Is there a cause you’re passionate about? If so, please elaborate :) There are many! One in particular is education for the youth- specifically young girls. Having access to good education is something that we might take for granted here in North America. I strongly believe that all girls deserve to go to school, without the risk of being harmed or discriminated against. Each year, I donate a percentage of our profits to She's the First, an organization that has been working to improve this global issue for 10 years. I have a background in education and have worked as a teacher for a few years, so this is definitely a direction I see myself working on further as well.

Do you have a piece of jewelry that’s sentimental to you? In the past, jewelry was often gifted to me and wasn't really something I bought for myself. So when I would wear it, it was quite sentimental or at least would remind me of a particular person. I appreciate the fact that as I get older, I can actually have more fun with jewelry and buy myself the pieces I like, rather than wear jewelry for sentimental reasons. Maybe it's less personal, but it still feels powerful to know that you don't need to wait for anyone to give you jewelry for it to be meaningful. I think all these cool new e-comm jewelry brands, like Jomami, make it more accessible for young women to make jewelry purchases for themselves. My latest purchase has been these big solid gold hoops that just give me disco vibes and I'm obsessed with them. They instantly make me feel put together.
