Myla Cherry Gardens Founder

Myla is the founder of Cherry Gardens. She's inspired by Jamaica and Mexico, went cave exploring in Belize, and loves a good bubble bath. Read on to find out more about her.

How do you describe what you do?

I make clothing that is quality-focused, universally flattering, minimal, and that you can look and feel good in. It’s for those who like the comfortable, uncomplicated things in life. I wanted to make sure that my brand is as inclusive as possible, featuring real people that, like myself, maybe didn’t have that representation growing up, didn’t see people that looked like them represented in the media. Cherry Gardens is a very personal and authentic expression of my aesthetic.

What’s your vision for your brand? Where do you want to take it?

I want to expand the assortment to include a more diverse range of product, including unisex styles. I want this brand to be as inclusive as possible--think Fenty-level inclusive! Offering extending sizing is a start, with this launch I included XL and the plan is to keep adding more sizing down the road. Long term, I see it being an international brand; shorter-term, the goal is to make this into my full-time gig - right now it’s still a side hustle alongside my day job.

Is there a career (or personal) accomplishment you’re proud of?

I’m proud of building this brand to the level it’s at right now on my own. I pride myself on sourcing local in both my materials and labour, and I’m honestly the most proud of myself for just starting it; turning from it from this idea in my head into a full-fledged, tangible thing! To see people responding so positively to my efforts and enjoying my product is the best feeling. I’ve worked in the fashion industry for about a decade and this has been my most challenging yet enjoyable project to date.

Where is your favourite destination in the world?

Which country have you traveled to that inspired you most? So hard to choose one - every place I’e visited has inspired me in some way. I would say either Mexico (Mexico City has such a vibrant culture) or Jamaica (a neighbourhood I lived in as a child there inspired the name of my brand!).

Is there an adventure that changed your life?

Cave exploring in Belize!! Inexplicably amazing.

What’s an adventure you’re excited to take (maybe when COVID is over)?

Either Morocco or Japan. Would love to do all over Southeast Asia too.

What’s your favourite way to recharge/relax?

A bubble bath and a book.

Do you have a piece of jewelry that’s sentimental to you?

My simple silver band that I made myself in a gold smithing class I took. It has my initials stamped on the inside, and I made a matching one for my best friend.

Jewelry Lightning Round:
