Roslyn McLarty | Co-Founder of The GIST

How do you describe what you do?

I'm one of the Co-Founders of The Gist. We create sports content, experiences, and community that are all by women and for all types of sports fans. This is done predominantly through our twice-weekly email newsletter, podcasts, and social media. I head up all of our operations, finance, and growth of the company.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

Lately I've been really into starting the day with an Ashtanga yoga practice along with a meditation. Then usually I'll drink a coffee and jump right into the day.

Where is your favourite destination in the world?

I'm the happiest when I'm outdoors or by the ocean, or by a body of water, so my family cottage holds a really special place in my heart for that reason.

Which country have you traveled to that inspired you most?

I get a lot of inspiration from really big, busy cities like New York and Hong Kong. There's an electric energy about them and you know that the people there are really ambitious and chasing their dreams. I get a lot out of being in those places and can really feel the energy and it's inspiring. I traveled to Hong Kong out of personal interest but have been going a lot to New York recently on business. We just expanded our business into the US last year. There's a lot of opportunity in the sports industry and sports media in New York.

Is there an adventure that changed your life?

In 2017 I went to Costa Rica to do a yoga teacher's training program. I've been practicing yoga since the early 2010s so I really wanted to deepen my practice and my understanding of what it is and where it came from so it was great for that. I learned a ton, but it was also a really great opportunity to take a step back from day-to-day busy life. It was a solo trip so it was nice to go on my own and meet people who were different from my usual social circle and take some time to reflect on myself and my place in the world.

What’s your favourite way to stay active?

I like yoga and soccer. I played soccer a lot growing and up and still do now. I'm also a big fan of walking with a good podcast or music. A long walk is a nice way to unwind at the end of a busy day.

Is there a career/personal accomplishment you’re proud of?

Starting The Gist is the accomplishment I'm the most proud of. At the time it felt like a controversial career move. I had been working in accounting at a Big 4 accounting firm so I had my career trajectory laid out, and I had no business starting a media company. Looking back now and seeing how far it has come and how it has grown is very humbling.

Is there a cause you’re passionate about?

I'm passionate about encouraging young girls and women to go into entrepreneurship. I want them to use their unique experiences and perspectives to create something meaningful and provide something that's missing in the world. A lot of the time women are less encouraged than men to be ruthless businesspeople and take risks. It's also important to provide funding for women. Only 4% of venture capital funding goes to women.

Do you have a piece of jewelry that’s sentimental to you?

As an end of the year team activity I went with my two business partners to get our ears pierced and so the studs I got my ears pierced with are sentimental to me.
