Victoria Gravel | Photographer

Victoria Gravel
Victoria is a Montreal-based photographer who's pursing a degree in psycology. She's inspired by Puerto Rico, loves the book The Kite Runner, and is proud of her time researching the epileptic population. Read on to find out more about her!
How do you describe what you do?
I'm a freelance photographer from Montreal. I do women portraits and being myself part of the visible minority, I always want to represent diversity through my work.  Also, I only shoot film.
What’s the first thing you do in the morning?
I check my emails and then hop in the shower!

Where is your favourite destination in the world?
I guess Los Angeles. I love the fact that we can find the beach, the mountains, the desert, the snow and the city all at the same place.

Which country have you traveled to that inspired you most?
Puerto Rico. I had the chance to visit PR right before Hurricane Maria hit the island. I was very disappointed by the way Trump's administration handled the situation so I decided to put up a solo exhibition during December 2017 to raise money. I had all my work from 2017 gathered and printed some of my personal favorites photographs from PR to sell.

Is there an adventure that changed your life?
My trip to Havana, Cuba. It was my first time travelling with some friends and it was such a lovely experience. My friends and I had the chance to connect with the people over there and interviewed them for a personal project. Having a very different reality from us, it was very touching to hear their views and opinions about the outside world.

What’s your favourite way to stay active?
I suck at working out (not gonna lie!) and can't commit to a gym membership lol. But I really do enjoy long walks while listening to music so I tell myself to go outside at least once a day to have my daily walk (especially during this time!).

What’s an adventure you’re excited to take?
Aside from doing photography, I'm also a full-time student. I'm currently doing my degree in psychology. My ultimate goal is to do my phD in the following years. It's a very long adventure, but I'm super thrilled about it.

Is there a book that’s changed your life?
The Kite Runner. I had to read it in high school for my French class and I would do it again and again :)

Is there a career/personal accomplishment you’re proud of?
Last summer, I had the chance to do research among the epileptic population as part of my internship and I'm doing it again this summer. Honestly, this is one of my personal accomplishments I'm the most proud of. A few years ago, I wouldn't have imagined myself having this opportunity or even being able to practice both psychology and photography.

Where can people find you?
